Vintage Treasures and a girly weekend in "Palmy"

When Jo Burney told us about a vintage treasures fair in Palmerston North last year at Autumn Escape we were pretty sad that we had missed it only by a few weeks. The Palmerston North Methodist Social Services collects vintage treasures all year and then has a huge sale to raise money for the church.

Jo said that she would let us know when the next one was going to be and we vowed then and there at Autumn Escape to meet in “Palmy” and make it a girly weekend. Jo has been to many of the sales and said to us “ You never know what you will find”. This year was no exception! Rach, Kate, Jo and I spent a good couple of hours rummaging through sewing treasures, vintage lace, buttons, linen and all sorts of beautiful old and battered things.

 

Oh what fun we had …… walking down the street (in the rain) holding on tight to our newly purchased vintage leather suitcases full to the brim. I went for the linen and managed to find quite a few wooden cotton reels for a very reasonable price. I also loved the ½ finished needlework table coverings and doilies that I was able to pick up for a fraction of what I think they are worth. Rach brought a gorgeous vintage handbag and a few other yummy treasures. (that girls got impeccable style!)

 

It was a weekend filled with drinking bubbles, discovering vintage treasures, eating out, shopping, relaxing in the spa, coffee, talking, more Red Bull and vodka than one person is supposed to drink in one night and dancing till 3am !  All in all another fun girls weekend. I’m so lucky to not only have a husband that loves to spend "Daddy time" with his daughters, but girlfriends who let me be me. Who let me talk, drink, laugh and dance along with them. 

 

Can’t wait until next year, who wants to join us ?

Apron Class at Autumn Escape - Update

This will be the last year that my apron class will be offered at Autumn Escape and we are delighted to announce that Lisa from “The Shabby Rose” has come on board a sponsor, providing some extra gorgeous fabrics!

 
The fabrics come from the Basic Grey range “Blush” and are a perfect complement to the Prima flowers and vintage trinkets that I can’t wait to share with you.

Take a look at the sneak - see the cute little pair of stork scissors? This year they are part of the class kit too! I am going to show you how to embellish them with cute vintage inspired trinkets and your very own hand made velvet strawberry. You don’t need to be an expert at sewing to take this class; a little bit of hand stitching is all it takes to create something wonderful.

Scrapmatrix project three - layout "The Look"

Finally today I have a layout for you. I have incorporated “out there chippy”, cream crochet flowers, and flower cabochon. A little bit of Prima to finish it off !!

Scrapmatrix project two - mini album

My next project for ScrapMatrix is a mini album using the Vintage Inchie Album, just lovely.

 

The chipboard inks up well.  I’ve used a Colour Box fluid Chalk inkpad in Charcoal on this project. 

 

Under the frame is also some German Scrap. Just love that too ! and also a cream crochet flower, yummy.

Scrapmatrix project one - artbox

A few weeks ago I had an email from Scrap Matrix. Rae asked me if I would like to design a few projects with some of her “soon to be released” chipboard products called “Out there Chippy”.

I said YES and within a few days a huge packet of all sorts of goodies was on my doorstep. Not just the chipboard products but an art box, and vintage trinkets. I remember emailing Rae and saying how gorgeous it all was, how delicate the designs were and how much I loved it.

I fell head over heels in "love" with this miniature suitcase. It opens up ! You could fill it with anything you wanted. I decided I would do some journaling and once it was in there I sealed it up. Hopefully one day to be discovered again, like treasure. Shhh don’t tell anyone it is in there.

 

The other vintage trinket that I adore is the birdcage ! Super cute don’t you think? (I need another one to make into a necklace).

 

The velvet strawberry is handmade by me.

 
The divine faded pink velvet is a vintage “one of a kind” find that Miss Kate and I just about had a fight over it in the autique shop. I am positive that I spotted it first though.  The delicate chipboard frame can be found here.

Facebook auctions for Christchurch

“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have”

I saw this quote this morning and thought about the people of Christchurch. It is one week already since the earthquake in Christchurch. We have been glued to the TV in our house, wondering, hoping that they might just find someone still alive in the rubble of the wrecked office buildings. 

I grew up in Wellington and thought that I knew what earthquakes were like. That was until the day I was on holiday in LA in 1994 when a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck. One "good" thing about this earthquake was that it happened at 4.31am. A lot of people were not at work, not out and about like they were in Christchurch. It is this very fact that saved so many lives in LA. I can not even begin to imagine what it was like in Christchurch that day. The one thing that being in LA on that day taught me was, when you are in a big earthquake you feel totally helpless, there is nothing you can do to make it stop.

My heart goes out to the people of Christchurch, such a beautiful city totally destroyed.
